What to Expect at Your First Visit

How to prepare

For 24 hours prior to your visit:

  • Do not douche, rinse or use any enemas.
  • There is no special diet. The only preparation is to have a bowel movement prior to your exam.
  • Do not put anything, including medications or products into your anus.
  • Please reschedule your appointment if you have an active sexually transmitted infection and are receiving treatment.
  • Your provider will review your general health and risk factors for anal cancer prior to the exam.

High resolution anoscopy (HRA)

This is a procedure that uses a small lubricated plastic tube and a high-resolution magnifying instrument called a colposcope to allow for close examination and evaluation of the anal canal. This procedure is used in the treatment and surveillance of anal dysplasia and the prevention of anal cancer in high-risk populations.
